Investigator: David Sibley, Ph.D.
Affiliation:Molecular Neuropharmacology Section
Position Type:Postdoctoral Fellowship
Description:
A position is available in the Molecular Neuropharmacology Section, National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke. This Section investigates receptor-mediated information transduction, and its regulation, across neuronal membranes. The primary model systems are those receptors linked to their signal transduction pathways via G-proteins with specific emphasis on dopamine receptor subtypes. In order to characterize these receptors at the biochemical and molecular levels and study their regulation, there are several interrelated ongoing lines of research. These include investigating receptor structure/function/pharmacology relationships, receptor-effector coupling mechanisms, and molecular mechanisms of receptor desensitization and intracellular trafficking. A major thrust of the laboratory's current efforts are directed towards using high throughput screening (HTS) technologies for identifying and developing novel ligands for modulating dopamine receptor expression and signaling. These include positive and negative allosteric modulators and ligands that are functionally selective in their signaling properties. Such ligands may prove useful in the development of novel pharmacological therapies for treating numerous neuropsychiatric disorders associated with aberrant dopaminergic signaling. The successful candidate will focus his/her efforts on one of these drug/probe discovery projects. The position will be fully funded by the NIH. Requirements include a Ph.D. and/or M.D. with less than 5 years of postdoctoral experience. Fellows from abroad are required to hold a J-1 visa.
