Postdoc Opening

Investigator: Benjamin White, Ph.D.
Affiliation:Section on Neural Function
Position Type:Postdoctoral Fellowship
Description:

The Section on Neural Function develops and applies tools for identifying neuronal networks underlying behavior in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Using genetic tools for the targeted manipulation of neurons, we have focused on the mechanisms by which environmental and intrinsic influences are weighed to generate an elementary behavioral decision in the adult fly. This decision, which occurs at the end of metamorphosis, is made in the context of the fly's final molt and the laboratory's broader interests are in understanding the development, function, and evolution of the neuroendocrine network that regulates molting in the fly. Our work thus spans the full range of issues relevant to neurobiology from molecular and neuronal signaling mechanisms to network development and function to behavioral output and organization.

A postdoctoral position is currently available to study one or more of the problems within the domain of interest of the lab. A broad background in neuroscience is essential. Interdisciplinary interests and previous experience working with Drosophila are a plus. New initiatives in the laboratory include calcium imaging of neural network activity and mapping patterns of neuronal connectivity within networks. Candidates with backgrounds in these areas or in neurodevelopment are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application Instructions:

Candidates should send a CV, a short summary of their research experience and future goals, and contact information of three references to benjaminwhite@mail.nih.gov .
