Investigator: Jerrel Yakel, Ph.D.
Affiliation:Regulation of Synaptic Transmission and Plasticity in the Brain
Position Type:Postdoctoral Fellowship
Description:
Available immediately in the Laboratory of Neurobiology, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS/NIH), in Research Triangle Park, NC, to study the function and regulation of nicotinic ACh receptor (nAChR) channels and their role in synaptic physiology and plasticity in the hippocampus. Current projects in the lab utilize hippocampal brain slices and neuronal cultures, as well as various expression systems to study the role these channels play in regulating hippocampal neuronal activity, as well as how intracellular signal transduction pathways (i.e. phosphorylation, Ca2+) modulate the physiological properties of these channels. In addition to patch-clamp electrophysiological techniques, we utilize confocal and video imaging techniques, as well as laser-induced local photolysis of caged molecules. Applicants with electrophysiological experience are essential, and expertise in confocal microscopy, calcium imaging and/or molecular biological techniques would be a great asset. Applicants must have less than 5 years of postdoctoral experience, and salaries start at an annual rate of $ 42,300 per year (for those with less than 1 years experience), with annual increases of $ 1,600 per year. For additional information, contact Dr. Jerrel L. Yakel by phone at 919-541-1407, or by Email at yakel@niehs.nih.gov.
